February is January with the New Year crowd gone and two degrees added. It is, for a first visit built around the monuments, arguably the single best month of the Egyptian year — warm enough to be outdoors all day, cool enough that a full morning at Karnak is a pleasure rather than an endurance test, and busy without being oppressive.

Is February a good month for Egypt?
It is arguably the best. Daytime temperatures of 24–26°C in Luxor are ideal for walking sites, the air is dry and clear, and the January peak has passed. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 February is a genuine spectacle worth planning around.
What is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?
Twice a year — on 22 February and 22 October — sunrise penetrates sixty metres into the temple of Ramesses II and illuminates the statues in the inner sanctuary. It is an alignment built deliberately into the temple three thousand years ago and preserved when the whole structure was moved in the 1960s. It draws large crowds and needs booking well ahead.
What should I pack for Egypt in February?
Light layers for the day, a proper jacket for evenings, closed walking shoes for uneven tomb floors, a hat and high-factor sunscreen — the winter sun is weaker but the exposure at open sites is constant. Add a scarf for mosque visits and for the occasional dusty day.
