The Fayoum is Egypt's oldest oasis and its most surprising day of travel: a fertile basin an hour and a half southwest of Cairo where the rules of the desert are suspended. Wadi El Rayan's twin lakes spill into each other over Egypt's only waterfalls, dunes run straight to the water's edge, and the wind farms of birdlife on Lake Qarun have drawn travellers since pharaonic times — the region's waterwheels, still turning, are its emblem. Beyond the green rim lies Wadi Al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage site scattered with forty-million-year-old skeletons of early whales that still had legs. Tie it together with lunch among the potters of Tunis village and you have the richest single day trip Cairo offers — or an unhurried overnight under desert stars.

Is the Fayoum worth a day trip from Cairo?
If you have four or more days in Cairo, emphatically yes — it is the day that surprises people most. In one loop you walk among forty-million-year-old whale skeletons at a UNESCO site, watch waterfalls in the desert, run dunes above a lake and lunch in a village of potters. It is Egypt with no queues and almost no coaches.
What is Wadi Al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales?
A UNESCO World Heritage site in the desert southwest of the Fayoum, holding hundreds of fossilised skeletons of early whales — creatures that still carried hind legs — from around forty million years ago, when this desert was a shallow sea. The fossils lie along open walking trails, with a small, excellent visitor centre.
Can children enjoy the Fayoum?
It is one of the best family days in Egypt: sandboarding on the dunes, boats and birdlife on the lakes, whale skeletons that beat any museum for imagination, and a pottery wheel to try in Tunis village. The distances between stops are short, so attention spans are rarely tested.
